SUMMER READING LIST

Research shows that reading helps prevent summer learning loss. This is especially true for language learners! Children need to read in both their dominant and second languages. By reading, kids can maintain and even improve their language skills during the summer months.

“When picking out a book to read, be sure the book is at your level. Read a page and lift up a finger for every word you don’t know on that page. If you lift all five fingers, then it means that the readability level is too high, and the book is too advanced for you.” Does that sound familiar? It’s the five-finger rule that reading and language arts teachers generally teach their students when picking books for independent reading.

To determine readability, books are measured against leveling systems such as Fountas and Pinnell, Reading Plus, Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA), or the Lexile Framework. These popular systems measure things such as words per line and per page, sentence complexity, syllable complexity, number of dolch words vs. academic vocabulary, and so on.

Meeting this requirement for FLES (foreign language in elementary school) students is a little more complicated. Why? Because the classrooms exposure to language, including vocabulary and grammatical structures, is more controlled. It has to be in order for a child to learn and practice the new language accurately and in a structured way. Most first-year students will actively work in the present tense and vocabulary will be specific themes (such as animals) or tasks (such as school-related activities). (SantillanaUSA)

Las Hormigas-Otter Class

As we continue with our songs, finger play, frutas y colores we are taking a break to learn about hormigas! Since the otters recently welcomed an ant farm into their classroom I thought we could learn about them in SPANISH. Enjoy the video below that teaches us all about our new hormiga friends 🙂

I am also adding a popular kids show Los Mundos de Uli. It is an educational show, this particular episode is about hormigas!

Bring Spanish Home!

Just a friendly reminder that I want to encourage you all to bring Spanish language and culture into your home! Perhaps have a family ¨date night¨ when you try a Latino restaurant and go home to watch a Spanish movie? Maybe you watch the movie CoCo or Ferdinand and talk about the cultural similarities and differences? Maybe try watching a few Spanish televised programs? Check out Telemundo for real world shows! I only have your students for 45 minutos, 2x/week! I wish I could see them everyday 🙁 If we do not bring language home, how can we expect fluency or fluid conversation and understanding?

Here are some things you should do to bring Spanish into your home:
-Find a tandem partner to have free, regular conversation practice in an informal setting. As a bonus, they’ll probably come away with a new friend!
-Change the language of all electronic devices and social media sites to Spanish.
-Make the most of free resources like newspapers and library publications, which are perfect for reading and translation practice.
-Watch Discovery Kids Latino, Disney Latino chances are any show your student likes has a Spanish version! I am attaching several links below for your reference.

Otters: Vocabulario de la clase

Hola!

This week we continued with our regular vocabulary and also learned the materials in the classroom! We were able to label different items and areas of the room. Some of the vocabulary is listed below for your review 🙂

As always, it is a pleasure to teach your students! They never cease to amaze me with their retention and accents.

Pencil Lápiz
Table Mesa
Chair Silla
Desk Escritorio
Light Luz
Telephone Teléfono
Carpet Alfombra
Door Puerta
Window Ventana
Computer Computadora

OTTERS

Up, down, right, left! We learned these in English and then Spanish.

We also learned transporte(transportation). We also continued reviewing emociones, colores, animales, formas, las partes del cuerpo and are learning a new song 🙂

Videos y fotos to come!

OTTERS

HOLA!

I thought I would share with you the exciting things that have been happening in the otter class!

We have continued reviewing colors, body parts, numbers, animals, transportation, frutas and shapes! We have also moved onto different kinds of clothes!

I brought my trusty amigo Diego into class who was wearing pantalones cortos (shorts) in the snow! AY YAY AY! We then used Spanish vocabulary to decide what clothes he needed if he wanted to go out to recess. It was fun to see their faces light up as Diego talked and giggled about his clothes choices.

We also read a fun book “Llama Llama Rojo Pijama” about modales (manners). They truly loved reading this book! They were all giggles 🙂

As always, they enjoy singing the itsy bitsy spider in Spanish as well as the “dedito” song! We are still mastering the songs about our hands. They also have a new found love for the hokey pokey, endless joy!

OTTERS

We are moving fast and furious in the otter classroom! We have learned everything from las frutas, medios de transporte, las partes del cuerpo, emociones, colores, formas, animales y mucho mas!

I am attaching several fotos for your enjoyment!
Ask your student about songs that we do, they should know 4 total!

OTTERS

The weeks have been flying by and the vocabulary has been compounding exponentially. I am attaching some vocabulary below so you can review with your students 🙂

cansado. tired.
triste. sad.
feliz. happy.
enfermo. sick.
enojado. angry.
confundido. confused.
enfermo. sick.
soprendido. surprised.

We have continued doing las frutas as well as numeros. We have also begun to learn La Araña Pequeñita, the ittsy bitsy spider. As always, try to bring language into your home!

OTTERS

Muy feliz lunes!

I hope you all had a great fin de semana!
I am writing to let you know what we have been doing in the Otter classroom.

Last week was mainly introductory to the language and acclimating them to the different sounds and accents of Spanish.
We also did emotions, colors and numbers 1-10, these subjects will later become our “brain warm up” at the beginning of every class.

We also learned the song “con mi dedito.” I will insert the link below. This is a fun song I like to use because of it’s TPR values and as a “brain break.” But of course, singing in another language is an invaluable experience and in no time they will sing the song with fluency. So far, we have learned the first verse!

We also started learning the different types of fruit. Everything from mangos to bananas. We dove deeper into this subject and discussed if the fruits were sweet (dulce) or sour (agria).

As always, it is a pleasure to teach my language and culture. If you have any questions please feel free to email me!

Bienvenidos al Mundo Hispano

This year I have the great problem of way too many ideas of what to do on the first day of school.

I could not be more excited about beginning another school year of teaching PreK-5th! Spanish is so importante and I am blessed to be able to teach the language and culture.

Allow me to give you a glimpse into the first day of class!

BEFORE CLASS – A Spanish Pandora Station will be playing to acclimate them to the LATINO climate of my classroom
GREET – I greet all students at the door in Spanish with a smile and a seating card. I will ask their name in Spanish, modeling “Me llamo Senora Oliver” “¿Cómo te llamas?”
INTRO MYSELF – I will introduce myself using a PPT in Spanish with a lot of actions, movement and enthusiasm.
¿y tú? – I will ask each student what language is spoken at home
CIERTO O FALSO – We will play a fun game about common misconceptions about the Spanish language and the people who speak it
REFLECT – We will talk about expectations within the classroom and throughout Quest Academy

Next week is Meet the Teacher Night and I will handing out curriculum outlines for each specific grade. If you are unable to attend please email me and I can send it to you!
