El Mes de la Herencia Hispana

El Mes de la Herencia Hispana : Hispanic Heritage Month

I am excited about moving forward with our current Spanish lessons on el horario escolar (the school schedule), dias de la semana, meses, el tiempo, numeros y mucho mas!

However we are also learning about Hispanic Heritage Month! Hispanic heritage is not something to be discussed only a month out of the year, we are everywhere all the time 🙂 Today in class we listened to a Telemundo newscast to see if they could understand what was being said. I was excited to hear several students have watched Telemundo at home! It is important for students to realize Spanish is not just in my classroom, it is EVERYWHERE!

We then watched a second video about immigration (Both video links below)
It sparked a contagious conversation about where I come from and the difference in cultures.
I assigned homework :
#1) Ask you parents about their heritage
#2) Ask your parents if there were any cultural differences among their heritage and their interactions at Quest and in the USA

As always, please reach out if you have any questions!

OTTERS

Muy feliz lunes!

I hope you all had a great fin de semana!
I am writing to let you know what we have been doing in the Otter classroom.

Last week was mainly introductory to the language and acclimating them to the different sounds and accents of Spanish.
We also did emotions, colors and numbers 1-10, these subjects will later become our “brain warm up” at the beginning of every class.

We also learned the song “con mi dedito.” I will insert the link below. This is a fun song I like to use because of it’s TPR values and as a “brain break.” But of course, singing in another language is an invaluable experience and in no time they will sing the song with fluency. So far, we have learned the first verse!

We also started learning the different types of fruit. Everything from mangos to bananas. We dove deeper into this subject and discussed if the fruits were sweet (dulce) or sour (agria).

As always, it is a pleasure to teach my language and culture. If you have any questions please feel free to email me!

quinto grado

5th grade burst into the classroom with much anticipation and excitement! We went over classroom expectations and had a lot of fun exploring Spanish language differences. We explored everything from accents and pace all the way to Spanish greetings.

We also reviewed the pledge, which they are expected to have memorized by the end of the month.

I am also adding an extra special book to the 5th grade curriculum this year, Esperanza Rising. For those of you who have not read this book, go to your local biblioteca and borrow it! It is a moving story about Esperanza and how sudden family tragedy strikes and they are forced to flee their farm in Mexico. They take up residency in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn’t ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances. Every Friday we will read this book for 10 minutes at the end of class. As we dove into the book I could see the angst and pressing interest on each student’s face.

As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions. Have a feliz lunes!

Bienvenidos al Mundo Hispano

This year I have the great problem of way too many ideas of what to do on the first day of school.

I could not be more excited about beginning another school year of teaching PreK-5th! Spanish is so importante and I am blessed to be able to teach the language and culture.

Allow me to give you a glimpse into the first day of class!

BEFORE CLASS – A Spanish Pandora Station will be playing to acclimate them to the LATINO climate of my classroom
GREET – I greet all students at the door in Spanish with a smile and a seating card. I will ask their name in Spanish, modeling “Me llamo Senora Oliver” “¿Cómo te llamas?”
INTRO MYSELF – I will introduce myself using a PPT in Spanish with a lot of actions, movement and enthusiasm.
¿y tú? – I will ask each student what language is spoken at home
CIERTO O FALSO – We will play a fun game about common misconceptions about the Spanish language and the people who speak it
REFLECT – We will talk about expectations within the classroom and throughout Quest Academy

Next week is Meet the Teacher Night and I will handing out curriculum outlines for each specific grade. If you are unable to attend please email me and I can send it to you!

Lemur Learning

FULL STEAM AHEAD!

The lemur class has been moving fast and furious with El alfabeto español. We are learning what Spanish letters say in comparison to what English letters say.

We’ve also been doing a lot of repaso. We’ve been doing cumulative assessments including (but not limited to)

Animales
Colores
Emociones
Las partes del cuerpo
El tiempo
Días de la semana
Numeros
Vocabulario del material escolar
Las frutas
Direcciones
Las formas
Ropa

As always, feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns! Fotos y videos to come!

Educación Del Carácter

3rd & 4th have been using adjectives to create portraits of a person that they admire. They chose who they wanted to draw and decided what adjectives best described that person. We used adjectives along with cross-curricular elements. We incorporated educación del carácter, art and Spanish to create amazing pieces that communicate in a variety of languages.

Once the projects were completed the students presented their wonderful creations. Of course it was a bilingual presentation. Some videos were sent earlier today and I am in the process of sending others.
The videos are still being sent, be on the lookout for a phenomenal video of your student!
